Kallidromiou Market

Day 1: Dive into the city's history

On your first day, opt for an early wake-up call. We promise, it's worth it: you'll be the first of the day to set foot on the Acropolis and its iconic Parthenon, Athens' most prized historical site. After a tour of the various archaeological sites, including the ancient Agora and the Keramikos cemetery, don't miss the Acropolis Museum, designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi and his Greek colleague Michael Photiadis. Bonus: take a break to sip an iced coffee on the terrace of the museum café, which offers a breathtaking view.

Round off your morning with a walk through the market on Kallidromiou Street. In the afternoon, stroll through the boutiques of the Monastiraki district. If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary, look for the discreet entrance to TAF (The Art Foundation), a cultural and artistic venue with a charming café in its central courtyard.

In the evening, sit back and enjoy a cocktail on one of the city's many rooftops as the sun sets.

Day 2 - Culture, gastronomy and sea air

To start the day, head to the Greek Parliament to watch the changing of the guard, which takes place every day at exactly the same time. A stone's throw away is the Benaki Museum, a superb showcase of Greek civilization. Hungry on the way? Try Koulouri, a typical sesame bread sold on every street corner in the city center.

If you can't imagine leaving Athens without seeing the sea, hop in a cab for the port of Piraeus, where you'll find the city's best seafood restaurants. The bravest will be tempted by a refreshing swim in the Aegean Sea.

Before you leave, take one last gourmet break to enjoy a Souvlaki: a pita bread topped with grilled meat, onions, tomato, yoghurt and parsley. Head for the "O Kostas" restaurant, serving one of the best in town since 1946.

Extending your evening? Let yourself be tempted by one of the city's trendy wine bars for a taste of Greek wines.
