The hand baggage allowance for HON Circle Members, Senators, Frequent Flyers and passengers with Star Alliance Gold or Silver status is determined by the respective travel class.
Your hand baggage must be stowed in the overhead locker or under the seat in front. Please therefore observe the maximum permitted size and weight for items of hand baggage.
Please note that the rules are applied consistently when boarding. Hand baggage that is too large or too heavy will be removed at the gate and carried as checked baggage. A fee will also be charged. These charges are significantly higher at the gate and can only be paid by credit card.
A foldable garment bag with maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm can also be accepted as hand baggage.
You will find further information in the summary of charges for checked baggage.
Less hand baggage, more convenience
With less hand baggage you board the aircraft more quickly, enjoy more comfort on board and contribute to the punctuality of your flight. That is why we also check your hand baggage for quantity, size and weight at the security control and at the gate.
Any items that do not meet the regulations must be checked in. This may be subject to a charge depending on the fare. With very busy flights, we sometimes also ask you to check in hand baggage at the gate that conforms to the rules. Please always ensure that you take your personal electronic devices (e.g. e-cigarettes, power banks, laptops and smartphones etc.), valuables, passport and medication with you into the cabin.
Adults and children with their own seats may also take the following on board, in addition to the permitted hand baggage:
- Handbag, laptop bag or shoulder bag (max. 40 x 30 x 10 cm)
- One pair of crutches, arm or leg splints, other types of medical prostheses
You may bring so-called “pocket buggies” on board as part of your free hand baggage allowance, if they are packed accordingly and are no longer recognisable as pushchairs.
If smaller aircraft are fully booked, in exceptional cases we may have to check in hand baggage at the gate. This will be for your safety and comfort.
Countries such as the USA, for example, have stricter rules regarding hand baggage. In these countries, passengers in First and Business Class with a second item of hand baggage must check the item in.
Particular regulations apply to hand baggage for flights from and within South Africa. Economy Class passengers may take one item of baggage (maximum dimensions 56 x 36 x 23 cm, maximum weight 7 kg) and one thin laptop bag with them. Business and First Class passengers may take two items of baggage (maximum dimensions 56 x 36 x 23 cm, maximum weight 7 kg) and one thin laptop bag with them.

- The bag and all the containers in it must be completely sealed when presented at the security check
Exceptions: medication and special foods
You may carry larger quantities of liquids (maximum 2 litres) in your checked baggage unless they are categorised asdangerous goods.
