Advance seat reservations and Extra Space passenger seat: terms and conditions
Advance seat reservations
1. Purchasing a seat reservation
- Seat reservations are only available to passengers who have booked a flight operated by SWISS or Edelweiss with tickets issued.
- A maximum of one passenger seat is bookable per passenger per leg. You can do so online up to 48 hours before departure.
- You do not have to make the seat reservation at the same time as the flight booking. You can reserve your passenger seat later via “Manage my bookings”.
- Charges quoted on swiss.com are billed in the currency of the departure country.
- The receipt will be available to print on swiss.com following confirmation of purchase and will be e-mailed to the address given during the purchase process.
- You are entitled to the selected seat category (e.g. extra legroom or preferred zone), but not the seat number chosen.
- The same conditions apply to children as adult passengers.
- The confirmation for your seat reservation must not be copied or amended. SWISS reserves the right to take legal action in the event of fraud.
- Online offers, fares or conditions may change at any time without notice. The selection of bookable passenger seats varies depending on supply and demand.
- SWISS reserves the right to move you for operational reasons even if you have reserved your passenger seat in advance. In that case you will be refunded the full reservation fee if you do not receive an alternative passenger seat equivalent to the seat category you booked.
1.1 Extra legroom seats
SWISS and Edelweiss offer passenger seats in Economy Class with extra legroom on numerous flights. Some of these seats are located immediately next to the emergency exit. Passengers on these passenger seats must therefore meet the following requirements:
- Passengers must be at least 16 years of age.
- They must be able to read and understand instructions in English, and comply with the crew’s instructions in the event of an emergency.
- They must have the capacity to perform the duties required without the assistance of a companion, parent or other relative.
- They must be willing and capable to assist in the unlikely event of an emergency.
- They must not be travelling with someone who needs their assistance in an emergency.
- They must not have a condition or responsibility that might prevent them from performing these functions or cause them to suffer bodily harm while performing these functions. They must also not have any physical impairment that would prevent them from carrying out the duties required.
Failure to meet with these requirements will invalidate a reservation for one of these passenger seats. You are not entitled to a refund of the charge paid. You will be allocated a different passenger seat at the airport or on board. The crew will decide in the event of any doubts.
1.2 Flights to/from USA only
Swiss designates certain bulkhead and extra legroom seats as “priority seats” for people with disabilities. If the designated “priority seats” have been assigned to other passengers, Swiss reserves the right to reassign seats as required to accommodate a person with a disability. The costs you paid for an advance seat reservation will be refunded to you in full if you do not receive an alternative passenger seat in the seat category you have booked.
2. Using the seat reservation
Keep the confirmation of your seat reservation and credit card used for the reservation ready to hand when you check-in at the desk or automatic check-in. Your seat reservation is only valid for the flight and date shown on the confirmation.
3. Children
The same conditions apply to children as adult passengers.
4. Validity
Your seat reservation is valid until the end of your flight with SWISS or Edelweiss. Your passenger receipt is then no longer valid and cannot be refunded.
5. Lost confirmations
If you use the electronic confirmation for your seat reservation, you can request a new one via “Manage my bookings”.
6. Conditions of Carriage
All seat reservations are governed by the General Conditions of Carriage for passengers, baggage and other services.

- SWISS reserves the right to change the rates and terms and conditions for advance seat reservations at any time with or without notice.
- SWISS reserves the right to move you for operational reasons even if you have reserved your passenger seat in advance. In that case you will be refunded the full reservation fee if you do not receive an alternative passenger seat equivalent to the seat category you booked.
1.1. Booking Extra Space passenger seats
In Intercontinental Business Class on board long-haul aircraft (A330-300, A340-300, B777-300ER), SWISS offers seats for advance passenger seat reservation with more privacy and additional storage space. These passenger seats are known as Extra Space seats.
- Reservation is only possible if the flight is operated with aircraft types Airbus A330-300, Airbus A340-300 or Boeing 777-300ER.
- Extra Space passenger seats can only be booked for intercontinental flights. Some routes might be excluded. The seats cannot be reserved if a long-haul aircraft is operated on the EU route network.
You can find the precise location of Extra Space passenger seats on the seating plans.
2. Redemption
- You must present your online receipt at the airport check-in desk on departure in printed or digital form (e.g. as an e-mail), together with the credit card used for your purchase.
- The service is valid only for the flight and date shown on the receipt.
3. Children
The same rules and fares apply to passenger seats purchased for children as adult passengers.
4. Lost e-documents
Lost e-documents can be re-sent via swiss.com/profile.
5. General Conditions of Carriage
All advance seat reservations are governed by the General Conditions of Carriage of SWISS.
Ticket rebookings and refunds
If you have an existing advance seat reservation, you can rebook or cancel your ticket easily and conveniently yourself via “My bookings”.
Please note that a confirmed advance seat reservation does not guarantee you a specific seat on board the aircraft (e.g. seat 3A). The advance seat reservation refers to the chosen seat category (e.g. Classic Seat, Preferred Zone Seat, Extra Legroom Seat, etc.).
An advance seat reservation applies to a single leg of your flight.
Please note that advance seat reservations are not refundable, either at the airport or on board.
When you book a seat in an emergency exit row, you must be able to meet the legal requirements. These will be explained to you during the booking process. Should you not meet these requirements, you will be allocated a different seat and you are not entitled to a refund.
If your advance seat reservation is changed unexpectedly, the following cancellation and refund conditions apply:
In the event of an operational change (e.g. a change of aircraft type or travel route), we will try to rebook you in the same seat category you have previously booked. However, the seat number you chose before may change. If we are unable to rebook you in the same seat category, your advance seat reservation is refundable.
Your advance seat reservation is also refundable if we cancel your flight.
If you make changes to your booking yourself, the following conditions apply to cancellations and refunds:
Changing your advance seat reservation without changing your flight
If you have made an advance seat reservation for your flight and wish to change your seat, you can do so via “My bookings”. The following rules apply:
You can change to a lower seat category free of charge. The price difference is non-refundable but is retained in your reservation and can be used for a later rebooking to a higher seat category (e.g. back to your previous seat category, if available, or to a higher seat category).
You can rebook to a higher seat category by paying the price difference.
Changing your advance seat reservation and your flight
If you change your flight and the route remains the same, you can transfer your advance seat reservation to the new flight. If the original seat category is not available on the new flight:
You can rebook to a lower seat category free of charge. The price difference is non-refundable but is retained in your reservation and can be used for a later rebooking to a higher seat category (e.g. to the seat category you originally booked, if this is still available).
You can rebook to a higher seat category by paying the price difference.
Should you also change your flight route, you may incur additional costs.
Refund for your advance seat reservation without your flight being refunded
Advance seat reservations alone are not refunded. However, if you have purchased an upgrade to a higher travel class, the advance seat reservation you previously purchased is refundable. Free upgrades that we offer as a goodwill gesture or for operational reasons do not entitle you to a refund for your prior advance seat reservation.
Refund for your advance seat reservation together with the cancellation and refund of your flight
Advance seat reservations are generally non-refundable, even when you cancel your flight. However, if the fare conditions allow, you can obtain a refund for your advance seat reservation together with a flight cancellation for Allegris Business Class and First Class seats.
Please note that if you only use part of your ticket, e.g. only BUD–FRA instead of BUD–FRA–NYC, the advance seat reservation is non-refundable.
