Entry
Being a pilot is a job like no other. Even the training is unique. SWISS is part of the Lufthansa Group and works closely with the European Flight Academy to give you the theoretical and practical foundation. There you are trained in the cognitive, technical and social and team skills you will need to master the challenges of your everyday professional work.
Process
- To qualify you must pass the DLR test. If you are a Swiss citizen between the ages of 17-23, you alternatively have the option of completing SPHAIR screening. With a SPHAIR Certificate you can also apply to SWISS directly (without the DLR Test).
- Since you will complete your flight training at the European Flight Academy (EFA), you will apply there and select SWISS as your preferred airline.
- If the result is favourable, you will be invited to an assessment. As soon as you have passed the one-day Lufthansa Group Assessment and the Pre-Airline-Fit and medical tests, and have a positive board decision, you will receive a Rahmen- und Darlehensvertrag from SWISS. This is your preliminary contract with SWISS. This means you do not have to pay the costs of your training on your own.
- You will complete the approx. two-year flight training at the EFA. In Zurich you will demonstrate your theoretical aptitude in three areas. These include meteorology, aviation law, navigation and much more. You will complete the practical part in Grenchen (Switzerland) and Phoenix (USA). In the end you will learn how to fly a commercial aircraft and obtain your pilot’s licence.
- Once you have completed your training successfully, your performance is analysed by SWISS once more and a final decision is made about your appointment at SWISS. You then receive your contract of employment. SWISS also covers the costs of the final part of your training, the so-called type rating. This is your training for a specific aircraft type. After that you will take off on a regular basis.
Training costs & Benefits
Pilot training is comprehensive and consists of three practical areas. It therefore doesn’t come cheap. The good news: With a framework and loan agreement from SWISS, you do not have to bear the costs of training by yourself. Funding is split:
- Your personal contribution is CHF 35,000.
- SWISS will give you a training loan of CHF 45,000 (Swiss citizens) or CHF 69,000 (EU or EFTA citizens) at a minimal interest rate. You pay back this loan later from your salary.
- The Swiss government covers the remaining costs of CHF 60,000 (Swiss citizens) or CHF 36,000 (EU or EFTA citizens).
These costs not only include your training but much more. This is a comprehensive list of all the benefits included:
- 12 months’ theoretical training in Zurich (excluding accommodation)
- Theoretical examination and licensing with the civil aviation authority
- Teaching materials and documentation, including an iPad and access to the Campus+ platform
- Practical phase in Phoenix (USA) including accommodation, flights and transfer costs
- Practical phase in Grenchen (Switzerland) including accommodation
- Radio operator’s certificate for the aeronautical radio service (AZF/BZF)
- ICAO language tests
- Uniform for the flight phases
SPHAIR graduates
Do you have a SPHAIR Certificate? Then you can apply to the EFA directly and do not require a DLR test.
Bachelor’s degree in aviation
The ZHAW School of Engineering in Winterthur and the EFA offer a joint bachelor’s degree in aviation. This will give you an extensive understanding of aviation matters. You can also obtain your pilot’s licence as part of the joint degree course at ZHAW and the EFA.
Direct + Ready Entry
Have you completed your flight training and are already a First Officer? There are three criteria for entry as a Direct Entry Pilot at SWISS:
- Valid Airbus type rating
- Multi-engine instrument rating with PBN
- Minimum number of flying hours required for the respective aircraft type.
Do you meet all the criteria? Then you can apply for job vacancies directly in the Lufthansa Group jobs portal.

SWISS aims to gain an impression of your psychomotor and social skills, as well as your personality, among other things. The assessment consists of an interview, group exercise and psychomotor tests.
A hair analysis is carried out as part of the medical. It is therefore important that you do not dye or bleach your hair for at least three months before your appointment and do not use any alcohol-based care products (e.g. hair gel or hair lotion).
If you wish to benefit from the SWISS funding model, there is also an additional pre-airline fitness test. This is partly covered by the discussion on the assessment day. So think about what your motivation for working for SWISS is before the assessment.
The two-year theoretical and practical training costs around CHF 140,000. SWISS funds a significant portion of this when you sign a framework and loan agreement with SWISS. You also benefit from grants from the Swiss government. You will find the precise rules under “Application & Training”.
As a pilot your work is irregular and you enjoy a high level of flexibility. This means you get several days off in a row for your family or hobbies.
Part-time jobs of between 40% and 95% are possible in principle. SWISS also offers the option of unpaid leave or a sabbatical.
An important topic. As an employer SWISS of course aims to include everybody, irrespective of their origin, skin colour, gender or sexual orientation. Proof of this is demonstrated by the Swiss LGBTI Label. SWISS has held this best practice standard for several years.
Direct & Ready Entry
In addition to the requirements you will find in the job description, you must also meet the following three criteria:
- Valid Airbus type rating
- Multi-engine instrument rating with PBN

The assessment consists of a test of your psychomotor abilities, an interview and a group exercise, plus psychometric performance tests, an English test and a risk questionnaire.
If you pass the assessment, next is a test of your flying abilities either in a flight simulator or at PIT, depending on your number of flying hours.
If you also pass this test, you will undergo a medical. Your application is then discussed in front of the Board (the decision-making committee) and a decision taken about your appointment.
