Diversity at SWISS
As the airline of Switzerland, SWISS embodies the traditional values of its homeland. SWISS also stands for diversity at the same time. Our SWISSness exists in many different forms and colours. Our mission as an airline is to bring people together from all over the world.
Professional and private lives
Combining work and family
Alongside flexible working times (in areas that do not require shift work), SWISS offers a series of part-time positions as well as job sharing opportunities and shared leadership agreements. SWISS promotes and supports remote working (e.g. working from home) by providing all ground employees with their own laptop.
Our cabin staff can also choose part-time employment of between 50% and 90% of the standard working hours.
Depending on the company’s organisational and operational requirements, our ground and cabin staff can also take unpaid leave over a longer period. Because most of our employees are passionate travellers, they consider options of this kind very practical in helping them tick off some more destinations on their bucket list.
Maternity and paternity leave
Based on their years of service, SWISS employees are entitled to up to four months’ maternity leave on full pay after the birth of their child. In addition, SWISS offers the option of taking unpaid leave, subject to operational requirements.
Fathers who work as ground staff are also entitled to two weeks’ paternity leave within 12 months of the birth of their child.
Child care
Many SWISS employees work outside normal working hours, at night and at weekends. This often makes arranging child care considerably more difficult. The Strampolino child daycare centre in Kloten is the first nursery in Switzerland to offer flexible child care times, from early in the morning until late in the evening, and at weekends. SWISS supports the nursery and in so doing also the mothers and fathers it employs.
Career breaks
SWISS also offers its cabin staff the option of taking a longer career break, subject to operational requirements. This “career break” can be for up to three years. Every employee can use this time as they please – for example for further training or study – and return to their job afterwards.
Everyone has the right to be themselves
ABQ is a non-profit organisation in German-speaking Switzerland. ABQ is a play on the letters ABC and Q for queer. School visits from people representing a diverse range of sexualities and gender identities give young people direct contact with queer people. Some of our employees are committed to this project in their leisure time on a voluntary basis. This creates the opportunity for an open dialogue and helps break down fear of contact, prejudice and insecurities. Young people learn that there are many different lifestyles and perspectives.
All partners of our employees – irrespective of their gender – benefit equally from:
- Offers for employees
- Pension and accident insurance in the event of the death of the employee
Health management: who we are
A healthy and motivated workforce is crucial for the success of a company. SWISS implements comprehensive health management that enables specialists from different divisions of our company to work together in continuously developing and refining our current processes and offers.
As an airline, flight safety is our top priority. And this commitment is also reflected in our health and safety culture.
In the event of sickness or accident, our employees can call on expert and individual support from our internal case management team. Our SWISS Medical Services handles all matters relating to work, travel and aviation medicine. Alongside our own company doctors, we also have staff counsellors who offer our employees optional and confidential support and advice.
Health management: what we do
SWISS offers a variety of balancing options to help employees stay fit and healthy: from various sports teams to lunchtime yoga, painting evenings right through to in-house massage, all employees should find the right counterbalance to their job. SWISS employees can also enjoy a series of additional benefits to ensure and maintain a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing, as well as insurance cover and supplementary accident insurance.
In addition to its permanent offers, SWISS also covers various health subjects in its internal training and carries out targeted campaigns to raise people’s awareness and appreciation for health-related subjects and concerns. The “Ten steps for mental health” campaign is a current example of this.
Older employees and retirement
Our goal as an employer is to have a workforce that is diverse at all levels and in every respect. Just as in society at large, the SWISS workforce is made up of employees from different generations.
Our older ground staff
All our ground staff of 55 and over are protected against redundancy.
SWISS offers an attractive company retirement pension: the company pays 60% of the total premiums (or two-thirds for senior management).
The standard SWISS retirement age is 64 for both men and women (or 63 for senior management). SWISS also pays its retired staff a special bridging pension equivalent to the maximum full state pension until they reach the statutory pension age in Switzerland.
Employees can take early or phased retirement from the age of 58.
Our older cabin staff
The standard SWISS retirement age for our cabin crew members is 62.
Here too SWISS offers its employees various options to ensure a smooth transition towards retirement. These range from working beyond the usual pension age, working shorter hours to working freelance. Employees can also take on other duties on request, for example working as an airport tour guide.
Young talent
Supporting young talent is very important to SWISS. We take our social responsibility for this very seriously. We invest in our trainees and therefore our future. Within our vocational training system, we support around 72 commercial and technical students in successfully completing their apprenticeship certificate. Young people can undertake a year’s practical experience with us straight from school with their school-leaving certificate or vocational school certificate. After successful completion of secondary school, there is the possibility of a follow-on position or even the opportunity to become a member of the cabin crew. SWISS offers graduates with a university, bachelor’s or master’s degree a wide choice of entry opportunities: whether that is a half year’s practical experience or one of our two trainee programmes "SWISS Experience" or "ProTeam".
SWISS therefore plays an exemplary role in the advancement of successful apprenticeships and offers meaningful work experience as a preparation for entry into the professional world. In so doing we provide optimum support for our young talents and expect personal responsibility in return. Each and every young talent thus has the opportunity to contribute to actively shaping the future of SWISS.
