Flying to Westerland - Sylt: tips and information for your trip
Fly with SWISS to Sylt (GWT). Sylt is the largest German island in the North Sea and has been a tourist magnet since 1855. The North Sea, dunes, heath and the Wadden Sea, all typical features of Northern Germany, are compressed here into one island.
It is also a nature reserve that amazes and entertains summer visitors. Best known are the gray seals, which enjoy the sun on the beach as much as the tourists. In the interior of the island live more than 600 species of butterflies, for many migratory birds the island is a breeding place. The shallow water around Sylt is also known as a breeding station for harbor porpoises.
The twelve villages of the island are worth seeing with their typical thatched Frisian houses. At the northern tip of Sylt there is List with a ferry port from the Danish neighboring island Rømø, the artists' colony Kampen, the former island capital Keitum or the southernmost settlement Hörnum. In Westerland, today's modern capital of Sylt, everyone meets for shopping, dining in one of the excellent restaurants or taking a relaxing stroll along the beach boulevard.
Kitesurfing, canoeing or sailing are popular, cycling and horse riding are also good ways to explore the island. A guided tour of the Wadden Sea is more or less obligatory on Sylt. After so much fresh sea air, you can satisfy your hunger with specialties such as Sylt fish cake, fresh halibut or Sylt king oyster. Enjoy your Sylt holiday with SWISS.
