As the final act in SWISS's 20th anniversary celebrations, 20 Airbus A220 aircraft are being given names of Swiss tourist destinations. A competition was devised in cooperation with Switzerland Tourism last December 2022, with more than 50 destinations submitting creative entries to have their name placed on one of our aircraft. The entries were assessed by a SWISS jury on the basis of four factors: Creativity, originality, authenticity and their SWISS connection – and the 20 best entries were then selected.
The 20 winners include the following destinations:
Andermatt (UR), Bad Zurzach (AG), Braunwald (GL), Brunnen (SZ), Fribourg (FR), Haslital (BE), Lenzerheide (GR), Mendrisio (TI), Morschach (SZ), Nendaz (VS), Rapperswil-Jona (SG), Rheinfelden (AG), Rütli (UR), Saas-Fee (VS), Sempach (LU), Solothurn (SO), Val Surses (GR), Verzasca (TI), Viamala (GR), Willisau (LU).
Voting Hangar Event
Three tourism destinations will each receive an additional hangar event for their outstanding and very creative application. Two namings will be held at Zurich Airport and one at Geneva Airport during 2023. For the public vote, the SWISS jury has pre-selected five locations whose applications were particularly impressive. Take a look at the unique applications and decide on your favourite. All participants will be entered into a prize draw for a SWISS Premium Economy return flight for two to a destination of your choice. Please find the conditions of participation below.*
Bad Zurzach
In addition to its historic old town, Bad Zurzach is known for two things: Its thermal spa and Papa Moll. The so-called "Papa Moll Land" is known far beyond the Swiss border with activities for young and old.
Fribourg - La Gruyère
Stay in Estavayer-le-Lac and stroll through the historic alleys or enjoy the rural idyll around Lake Gruyère? The Fribourg region invites you to relax and explore. Mendrisio
The municipality with the largest vineyards in the canton of Ticino attracts not only wine lovers with leisurely vineyard walks, but also explorers and adventurers will find prehistoric finds to marvel at in the archaeological park in Tremona.
Nendaz
Nendaz, in the heart of the 4 Vallées, can not only offer classic winter vacations with 410 km of ski slopes. Adrenaline junkies will find the ultimate kick including breathtaking scenery at Mont-Fort, from which you will be transported down the Tortin glacier to the Col de Gentianes by zip line at up to 100 km/h. Find out in the video what else Nendaz has to offer.
Viamala
The gorge of the same name between Thusis and Andeer has served as a central trade route since Roman times and has always been known for adventurous tales of daring crossings. Today, the Viamala tourist region has developed into a popular vacation destination thanks to its wide range of recreational and sporting activities. In the video you can find out what Viamala and SWISS have in common.
Voting
*Update 24 January: The voting has been closed. The SWISS social media community selected three favourites from among the 20 winners in a worldwide online poll:
Bad Zurzach (AG), Nendaz (VS) and Viamala (GR).
Each of these will enjoy its own physical aircraft naming ceremony within a SWISS hangar – two in Zurich and one in Geneva – in the course of 2023. Congratulations!
