A day in the cultural metropolis Basel

Here, only the territory of the canton bearing the same name, Basel-Stadt, is small. When it comes to history and culture, Basel is at the top of the list of most popular destinations. With around 40 museums, the idyllic Rhine metropolis not only has the highest density of museums, it is also considered Switzerland's oldest university town and boasts historic landmarks such as the large market square, the red sandstone town hall and the cathedral. Thus, the cosmopolitan, traditional and green city in the northwest of Switzerland offers a diverse range of cultural activities. Here are some ideas for a day trip in Basel.

#1 Brunch at Avant-Gouz

Hammerstrasse 141, 4057 Basel

The day begins with brunch at Restaurant Avant-Gouz. Located in the heart of Kleinbasel, the restaurant impresses with its ambience and its wide range of freshly prepared dishes. The brunch menus, which can be personalised with different ingredients, are highly recommended. The interior of the restaurant features old furniture combined with a touch of modernity and individuality. avant-gouz.com

#2 Shopping in the Läckerli Huus

Greifengasse 2, 4058 Basel

Shopping at the Läckerli Huus is of course a must when visiting Basel. The Läckerli Huus is located in Kleinbasel next to Clarashopping and the Manor shopping centre and stands out in the streetscape with its church-like building. They offer the traditional Basler Läckerli, but also other, more special varieties. The traditional Basler Läckerli is a gingerbread-like pastry made in Basel from honey, hazelnuts, almonds and candied fruit. laeckerli-huus.ch

#3 Visit to the Museum Tinguely

Paul Sacher-Anlage 2, 4002 Basel

The Museum Tinguely in Basel houses the world's largest collection of Jean Tinguely. The Basel native is one of the most important and imaginative artists of the 20th century. The museum is located right next to the famous F. Hoffmann-La Roche Towers, also one of Basel's many landmarks. A walk in the park next to the museum can be ideally combined with a visit to the Rhine promenade. tinguely.ch

#4 Walk on the Rhine promenade with a ferry ride

Whether summer or winter, there is always a lot going on along the Rhine promenade in Basel. The beautiful view can be enjoyed in one of the many restaurants or in the countless small "Buvetten" directly on the promenade, which invite you to enjoy snacks and drinks. Visitors can combine the walk with a crossing in a typical Basel ferry. In summer, the Rhine invites you to swim. The entry points for the popular Rhine swim are located along the promenade.

#5 Musical Theater Basel

Feldbergstrasse 151, 4058 Basel

The day ends with a visit to the Musical Theater Basel. Here, musical classics such as "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats" or concerts are performed. The musical CATS will be performed in English at the theatre until 22 January.  In a show lasting around two and a half hours, the cat characters delight young and old with acrobatic choreographies, hip swings and magic tricks.  musical.ch/en/musicaltheaterbasel
