Luxury in the mountains

St. Moritz is one of the most exclusive winter resorts of all. In the middle of the Engadine mountains, the village offers its guests not only sun and snow but also several five-star hotels – SWISS Magazine has visited one of them.

The "Carlton" is considered an institution in noble St. Moritz and accommodates guests from all over the world who want to take time for the finer things in life. Opened in 1913, it is now part of the "Tschuggen Collection", which also includes the "Tschuggen Grand" in Arosa and the "Eden Roc" in Ascona.

View

The five-star hotel has a "suite only" concept – each of the 60 rooms offers a view of Lake St. Moritz (Rhaeto-Romanic: Lej da San Murezzan), which can be reached by foot in a few minutes. In winter, the lake is frozen and becomes a horse racing track with thousands of spectators during the traditional "White Turf".

Wellness

The wellness area includes, among other things, an outdoor whirlpool where you can relax after a day in the snow and enjoy the view of the Engadine mountain landscape. Every now and then, a private jet flies by on its approach to neighbouring Samedan – with Piz Rosatsch in the background, this is a unique scene where you quickly forget about time.

Aperitif

A first-class aperitif is served in the "Bel Etage", the heart of the house with high ceilings, stucco and chandeliers. The cocktails by the fireplace with live piano are considered a highlight and have made the Bel Etage bar famous worldwide. Drink recommendation: East Indian Negroni, a refreshing twist on the Campari classic with rum and sherry instead of gin and vermouth.

Dinner

For dinner, guests can choose between the gourmet Italian "Da Vittorio", which has been awarded two Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points, the classically oriented "Romanoff" or a dinner directly in front of the fireplace in the Bel Etage. As part of its "Moving Mountains" philosophy, the cuisine emphasises plant-based ingredients and for example replaces refined sugar with local tree syrups.

Those who would like to be guests at the Carlton this year still have the opportunity to do so until the end of March. After that, the hotel will only open its stately doors again at the start of the season in December.
