Crew Tip Vienna: Discover Naomi's Favourite City

Servus and welcome aboard flight LX1582 to Vienna! My name is Naomi Hirzel. As a cabin crew member, I am not only concerned about the safety and well-being of our guests on board, but today I have the honour of presenting my personal favourites in the enchanting metropolis on the Danube.

Naomi Hirzel has been flying for SWISS since nine years.

In my almost nine years as a cabin crew member, I have had countless opportunities to visit Vienna, both professionally and for leisure. In 2020, I moved my place of studying from Winterthur to Vienna to get to know the city even better. The unique blend of tradition and modernity makes Vienna an irresistible destination. Are you ready to discover this fascinating city?

For a cup of coffee

As a coffee lover, Vienna is a true paradise for me. Nothing epitomises the Viennese way of life better than a visit to a traditional coffee house. Café Central, with its elegant atmosphere, piano music and a clientele that ranges from tourists to business people and students, is a real magnet. However, there can often be long waiting times here.
As a charming alternative, I recommend the equally rewarding Café Schwarzenberg. You should definitely try a Viennese Melange here - an espresso with frothed milk. The menu also has (almost) everything your heart desires, from cake to spinach and cheese strudel.

In Sisi's footsteps

For me, a visit to Schönbrunn Palace is an absolute must! The former summer residence of the Habsburgs is home to an impressive 1,441 rooms, 45 of which can be visited. The extensive palace park is a real highlight for budget-conscious travellers - admission is free. My personal insider tip: just before the sun goes down, the park takes on a magical atmosphere.

The seventh district: Vienna's trendy hotspot

Looking for a trendy neighbourhood? Then head for the seventh district. Neubaugasse and Burggasse in particular form the heart of the neighbourhood. This is where avocado toast meets vintage chic and spritz wine meets creative energy. Discover cafés like Adlerhof and vintage shops like Retroschatz. In short: a stroll through the seventh district is an all-round urban experience.

Off into the green

Vienna is often referred to as the "greenest city in the world".  The city owes this title to its numerous parks, among other things. Whether Stadtpark, Volksgarten or Sigmund-Freud-Park Votivkirche - each of these green oases has its own unique charm. This is where I find peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of the city and meet up with friends or crew members.

On a “schnitzel hunt”

The Wiener Schnitzel is probably the most famous dish in Austrian cuisine and is an essential part of any visit to Vienna. It tasted excellent at Meissl & Schadn. Watch out: It's worth making a reservation! If you're vegan, you'll also get your money's worth in Vienna: Velani serves plant-based schnitzel that everyone will enjoy.

You can cook your own schnitzel in a cookery course at Meissl & Schadn. It's still on my bucket list!

Ambience on the Danube Canal

In the evening, the Danube Canal unfolds its unique charm. With its numerous bars and clubs, it has become the centrepiece of Vienna's nightlife. The chic Loft Bar with its colourful ceiling is the perfect place to toast to the end of the day in a relaxed atmosphere.

Wine hiking on the city hiking trail

A metropolis that also has its own wine-growing region? That's Vienna! Here, wine hiking is not just a leisure activity, but a real cultural event that is celebrated by locals and tourists alike. The journey up the Kahlenberg begins with the number 38A bus. Once at the top, a panorama opens up that enchants me every time. From here, the city hiking trail 1 winds its way past vineyards and rustic wine taverns such as the Wailand winery or Mayer am Nussberg. The perfect opportunity to sit down in a relaxed atmosphere and savour a Grüner Veltliner. The fine wine is accompanied by a Viennese snack consisting of fresh bread and a selection of spreads. Enjoy your meal and cheers!
