A Swiss Hotelier's American Dream: Discover Washington D.C. with Stephane

Washington D.C. may be a new destination for SWISS, but for the Swiss hotelier Stephane, the city has been home for over two decades. From his early days in the industry to his current role as director of the iconic Hotel Washington, Stephane's Swiss heritage and passion for hospitality have shaped his perspective on the city. Join us as we explore the history and modern pulse of Washington D.C. with him – and make sure to check out his personal travel guide.

Growing up in the Swiss town of Le Locle, located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, Stephane discovered his passion for hotels and hospitality. After finishing his studies at the hotel management school in Le Roche in the Canton of Valais, he was drawn out into the world and decided to try his professional luck in Washington D.C. His original plan was to gain experience there for a year and then come back to Switzerland – but life had a different surprise in store: Stephane met Maria with whom he fell in love and got married. Now, 24 years later, he calls Washington D.C. his home and lives there with Maria and their two children. Over the years, he has been working for several hotels in the city, eventually becoming the proud director of the Hotel Washington, an iconic hotel just a short walk from the White House.

Stephane never forgot his Swiss roots. The warmth and attention to detail he learned back home guide him every day as he welcomes guests from all over the world. While the rest of his family still lives in Switzerland, his country of origin remains a huge part of his family life. Stephane takes a yearly trip back home, and his kids always spend the summers with their Swiss grandparents, exploring the cultural heritage of their father. Even after all these years, Stephane points out, he still heavily relies on his relatives to send him care packages… filled with plenty of Swiss chocolate.

Stephane's love for the city never wore off

You can't help but catch the excitement in Stephane's voice when he talks about Washington D.C. When he raves about the city to his guests and provides them with the best tips for their stay, there is no end to his enthusiasm.

Talking to him, you can really feel his love for the city's rich history and the constant activity surrounding the political heart of the United States. But it's the vibrant mix that truly captivates him: world-class museums, neighborhoods buzzing with unique identities, and a restaurant scene that's loaded with global flavors. Washington D.C. is a melting pot of cultures, a fact you can see in its diverse people and neighborhoods. And there’s the mall, but don't be fooled by the name – the National Mall isn't for shopping. It's a grand stretch of land where iconic landmarks tell the nation's moving history. The city's ability to change and evolve, the feeling of being at the center of it all – that's what makes Washington D.C. endlessly fascinating to him. And over the years, Stephane has met his share of influential figures, from head of states to celebrities. "Important people have a tendency to gravitate towards Washington D.C.", he observes.

The capital of the United States feels very European

He then dives into a bit of history, sharing some of the lesser-known facts that make D.C. unique. For example, did you know the capital is called "the District", or even "the Beltway", but at the same time is neither a state nor a city? The United States Constitution actually forbids that. With over 175 embassies and a population where 168 languages are spoken, it's incredibly diverse. Stephane loves pointing out that no building in D.C. can be taller than the base of the Capitol, and how the city, nestled between Maryland and Virginia, feels surprisingly European. He explains that we have George Washington and the French architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant to thank, for its founding and the grand, European-inspired design that sets it apart from other American cities.

Washington D.C. holds a special place in Stephane's heart. When asked how he would describe it in just one word, he simply calls it: "Fascinating". The only thing he might change? "The traffic", he adds with a chuckle.

But wait, there's more: He wants to let you in on a few local insider tips to make your Washington trip even more memorable. Some of these lesser-known gems are known mainly to locals and go beyond what a simple internet search will reveal. Think of them as Stephane's personal recommendations, the places he loves to guide visitors to – for a truly authentic experience.
