Sports baggage
If you want to transport items that are not day-to-day objects, such as extensive sports equipment or hunting weapons, please familiarise yourself with the valid regulations before you travel.
Transporting sports equipment
We are happy to transport your winter sports equipment free of charge in addition to your free baggage allowance (except when travelling on Economy Light fares).
Other normal sports equipment, we are happy to transport for no extra charge, providing you do not exceed your baggage allowance. If your sports equipment exceeds your baggage allowance in number of items or weight per item, you will be charged an extra fee.
Other costs, taking into account your travel class and the fare, can be worked out in our baggage calculator.
Special rates for sports equipment
The tariffs for sports equipment apply to each leg of flights operated by SWISS. Connecting flights within 24 hours count as one leg. Outbound and return flights must be paid separately in the local currency of the departure airport.
Registering sports equipment
We haven only limited storage space for sports equipment. We therefore recommend that you register the sports equipment you wish to carry as early as possible. You can register via your travel agent or use the online form below.
Important information
The special rates only apply if the sports baggage is being used exclusively to transport the items listed in the table. One item that is not featured in the list above will be tolerated for each item of baggage. If more than one of these items is transported in the sports baggage, passengers have to pay the normal rates for excess baggage. SWISS will only accept sports baggage weighing less than 32 kg or under 3.5 m in length.
The assignment of sports equipment to the “Normal” and “Large” categories is final and doesn’t change depending on the weight/size of the sports item. If the sports equipment contains any items not listed above, normal excess baggage rates apply.
Please make sure that you pack your sports equipment carefully to ensure that it is not damaged during transportation. Check in your sports baggage one hour before the latest check-in time.
If you are travelling in a group with a lot of sports baggage, the best thing to do is to contact us in advance.
Please note:
Bicycles can only be accepted if they are packed in a suitable bicycle case or a similar container. In Zurich and Geneva, SWISS provides complimentary bicycle boxes. In other locations, SWISS cannot provide any packaging material.
For SWISS Golf Traveller members, the carriage of golf equipment is complimentary in addition to the free baggage allowance on all flights operated by SWISS, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines. Other code share connections, all myAustrian Holidays flights and flights booked with an Economy Light fare are excluded. You may also transport your golf equipment in lieu of the free baggage allowance of your fare type, provided it does not exceed the size and weight restrictions of your free baggage allowance.
The first ski/snow equipment is complimentary in addition to the standard free baggage allowance on all LX operated flights (including wet lease). For journeys to/from/via the US, this only applies if you are booked on an LX operated flight and on an LX flight number. A fee will be charged for ski equipment exceeding the free baggage allowance if you are booked on a UA or other flight number, on combined flights with other airlines and on the Economy Light fare.
Constraints at London Heathrow Airport
Due to infrastructure constraints at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), a ban has been imposed on the transport of large items of sports baggage. This will take effect on 20 August 2018. Existing reservations will be honoured, but it will no longer be possible to book bulky items of sports baggage from/via or to London Heathrow Airport from 17 August 2018. Bulky sports baggage includes: canoes/kayaks, hang gliders, riding equipment, longboards, inflatable boats, tandems, pole vaulting equipment and windsurfing equipment.
Weapons and ammunition
Special regulations apply to the transportation of sporting and hunting weapons and ammunition. Weapons and ammunition must be packed in separate containers and checked in inside separate items of baggage. Please check this baggage in at least 120 minutes prior to departure. Please be sure to contact our Service Centre in good time if you plan to transport weapons or ammunition.
Transport regulations for weapons
The weapon must be secured and unloaded and packed in a transport case intended for this purpose.
Passengers are solely responsible for adhering to customs regulations, for obtaining an import permit and any other necessary documents. This applies both to passengers entering a country and to passengers in transit in a country.
Transportation regulations for ammunition
A maximum of 5 kg of ammunition of types 1.4S, UN 0012 or UN 0014 is permitted per passenger. The ammunition must be packed separately from the weapon in a solid container made of wood, metal or fibreboard. This container will protect the ammunition against vibration, movement and unintentional automatic release. On flights from and to South Africa, ammunition must be packed in a lockable ammunition box.
Additional security charges for weapon transport
Charges may apply for the transport of sporting and hunting weapons as a result of regulations in force in either the departure or destination country. These will be charged in addition to the rate for carrying sports equipment.
For departures from Zurich, weapons must be checked to make sure that they are unloaded. The costs for this inspection are CHF 55 per weapon and must be paid immediately by credit card to the company carrying out the inspection. You will receive full details of this procedure at the check-in desk.
For departures from Geneva, the firearms’ convoy is mandatory. The amount due for the firearms’ convoy is CHF 200 and should be paid by cash or credit card. Please note that only Swiss currency is accepted, no foreign currency. An extra fee of CHF 50 may be charged if the luggage containing the weapon must be stored in case of an early check-in over 2 hours prior to the departure of the flight. Fees are only incurred for passengers on flights to Spain or Italy.
Special regulations apply to the carriage of sporting and hunting weapons. A few countries, such as Switzerland, impose an additional security charge.
