Advance seat reservations and Extra Space passenger seat: terms and conditions

Advance seat reservations

1. Purchasing a seat reservation

  • Seat reservations are only available to passengers who have booked a flight operated by SWISS or Edelweiss with tickets issued.
  • A maximum of one passenger seat is bookable per passenger per leg. You can do so online up to 48 hours before departure.
  • You do not have to make the seat reservation at the same time as the flight booking. You can reserve your passenger seat later via “Manage my bookings”.
  • Charges quoted on swiss.com are billed in the currency of the departure country.
  • The receipt will be available to print on swiss.com following confirmation of purchase and will be e-mailed to the address given during the purchase process.
  • You are entitled to the selected seat category (e.g. extra legroom or preferred zone), but not the seat number chosen.
  • The same conditions apply to children as adult passengers.
  • The confirmation for your seat reservation must not be copied or amended. SWISS reserves the right to take legal action in the event of fraud.
  • Online offers, fares or conditions may change at any time without notice. The selection of bookable passenger seats varies depending on supply and demand.
  • SWISS reserves the right to move you for operational reasons even if you have reserved your passenger seat in advance. In that case you will be refunded the full reservation fee if you do not receive an alternative passenger seat equivalent to the seat category you booked.

1.1 Extra legroom seats

SWISS and Edelweiss offer passenger seats in Economy Class with extra legroom on numerous flights. Some of these seats are located immediately next to the emergency exit. Passengers on these passenger seats must therefore meet the following requirements:

  • Passengers must be at least 16 years of age.
  • They must be able to read and understand instructions in English, and comply with the crew’s instructions in the event of an emergency.
  • They must have the capacity to perform the duties required without the assistance of a companion, parent or other relative.
  • They must be willing and capable to assist in the unlikely event of an emergency.
  • They must not be travelling with someone who needs their assistance in an emergency.
  • They must not have a condition or responsibility that might prevent them from performing these functions or cause them to suffer bodily harm while performing these functions. They must also not have any physical impairment that would prevent them from carrying out the duties required.

Failure to meet with these requirements will invalidate a reservation for one of these passenger seats. You are not entitled to a refund of the charge paid. You will be allocated a different passenger seat at the airport or on board. The crew will decide in the event of any doubts.

1.2 Flights to/from USA only

Swiss designates certain bulkhead and extra legroom seats as “priority seats” for people with disabilities. If the designated “priority seats” have been assigned to other passengers, Swiss reserves the right to reassign seats as required to accommodate a person with a disability. The costs you paid for an advance seat reservation will be refunded to you in full if you do not receive an alternative passenger seat in the seat category you have booked.

2. Using the seat reservation

Keep the confirmation of your seat reservation and credit card used for the reservation ready to hand when you check-in at the desk or automatic check-in. Your seat reservation is only valid for the flight and date shown on the confirmation.

3. Refunds

Seat reservations purchased and paid for on swiss.com cannot be transferred and are not refundable in principle. This also applies in these cases:

  • You change your reserved passenger seat again when you check-in.
  • You have reserved a seat by an emergency exit but do not meet all the conditions (section 1.1) and fail to notify SWISS via the Service Centre at least 24 hours before departure.
  • You have paid for a seat reservation and your Miles & More status subsequently rises to a level where this service is complimentary.
  • SWISS upgrades you from Economy to a higher class (Premium Economy Class, Business Class or First Class) out of goodwill or for operational reasons, and you have already paid for a seat reservation.
  • SWISS upgrades you to a better from a cheaper passenger seat (e.g. from Standard to Preferred Zone) and you have already paid for a seat reservation.

The charges for seat reservations will only be refunded in these cases:

  • You are unable to meet the requirements set out in section 1.1 and informed SWISS about this fact via the Service Centre at least 24 hours before departure.
  • SWISS changes the seat category on your flight for operational reasons.
  • You can purchase an upgrade to a higher travel class.

4. Rebooking flights

If you rebook your flight, you are also responsible for changing your seat reservation. There is no charge for changing your seat booking if you reserve a passenger seat at the same or a lower price on the new flight. A supplement will apply if you reserve a seat at a higher price.

Fees are not reimbursed if you rebook to another route or airline or if the seat category you booked is no longer available on the new flight.

The charge for the seat reservation will be refunded if you rebook from Economy to a higher class (via a miles upgrade or by paying the fare difference).

5. Children

The same conditions apply to children as adult passengers.

6. Validity

Your seat reservation is valid until the end of your flight with SWISS or Edelweiss. Your passenger receipt is then no longer valid and cannot be refunded.

7. Lost confirmations

If you use the electronic confirmation for your seat reservation, you can request a new one via “Manage my bookings”.

8. Conditions of Carriage

All seat reservations are governed by the General Conditions of Carriage for passengers, baggage and other services.

1.1. Booking Extra Space passenger seats

In Intercontinental Business Class on board long-haul aircraft (A330-300, A340-300, B777-300ER), SWISS offers seats for advance passenger seat reservation with more privacy and additional storage space. These passenger seats are known as Extra Space seats.

  • Reservation is only possible if the flight is operated with aircraft types Airbus A330-300, Airbus A340-300 or Boeing 777-300ER.
  • Extra Space passenger seats can only be booked for intercontinental flights. Some routes might be excluded. The seats cannot be reserved if a long-haul aircraft is operated on the EU route network.

You can find the precise location of Extra Space passenger seats on the seating plans.

2. Redemption

  • You must present your online receipt at the airport check-in desk on departure in printed or digital form (e.g. as an e-mail), together with the credit card used for your purchase.
  • The service is valid only for the flight and date shown on the receipt.

3. Refunds

  • Advance seat reservations purchased on swiss.com (referred to below as “ASRs”) are only refundable on the conditions stated here.
  • ASRs purchased on swiss.com are not refundable if the customer rebooks voluntarily and the booked passenger seat features cannot be met on the new flight.
  • Reseating during check-in at the passenger’s request (seat selection is free of charge) does not qualify for a refund in any case.
  • If you rebook to First Class (by paying a flat amount or the relevant fare difference, via an M&M upgrade or any other upgrade products), the advance seat reservation is refundable but must be specifically requested by the customer themselves.
  • Advance seat reservations paid for via swiss.com can be refunded if the seat category booked cannot be provided for operational reasons.

4. Rebooking

  • If you rebook your flight, you must rebook your advance seat reservation on the new flight. No additional costs are incurred if the passenger rebooks an advanced seat reservation on the new flight.
  • The document expires and is non-refundable after you have completed the journey with SWISS for which the pre-paid advance seat reservation was issued.
  • Involuntary upgrades to a higher class (e.g. in the case of overbookings) do not qualify for a refund.

5. Children

The same rules and fares apply to passenger seats purchased for children as adult passengers.

6. Lost e-documents

Lost e-documents can be re-sent via swiss.com/profile.

7. General Conditions of Carriage

All advance seat reservations are governed by the General Conditions of Carriage of SWISS.
