The natural harbor of Bergen may be the reason why it was founded here in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre. In 1360 the German Hanseatic League opened a branch here, mainly for the trade of the medieval super food: dried fish called tørrfisk. The series of Hanseatic harbour houses called Tyske Bryggen have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. They burned down and were rebuilt several times, but always in their original style.
Exploring the small streets of the medieval quarter is a journey back in time, the Bryggen Museum gives you even more insight into life in Bergen 600 years ago. Take the Fløibanen from the city center to Fløien, a mountain 300 meters above the city. It is easy to imagine that trolls, fairies and other supernatural creatures once haunted these landscapes. From here you can see the town between the mountains and the fjord.
A good way to return to the town is to take an adventurous sleigh ride on Fløien, but this is only possible in winter. For winter sports enthusiasts, there are several ski lifts and cross-country trails near Bergen. After a day in the snow you may want to eat something typical from Norway.
In Bergen you will find the freshest and most delicious fish dishes in numerous traditional restaurants. Fenalår, a salted and dried mutton, is another traditional dish.
