High Season at SWISS: In the Cockpit with Captain Romano

In our summer series, we portray SWISS employees who are on duty during the challenging summer holiday period to ensure that our passengers have a carefree start to their holidays and a smooth return home. In our last episode, SWISS Captain Romano Schaller takes us on a flight to Athens and back. And, along the way, he shows us the special challenges that the summer months can bring to our cockpit crews.

The plan was for a normal flight rotation: Zurich to Athens and Athens to Zurich again. But as can unfortunately happen during the challenging summer holiday season, things turned out differently than expected. For the two pilots, the flight delays on this day turned out to be a central challenge. This not only required a lot of patience from the SWISS passengers, but also demanded a lot of flexibility from the entire crew. We were there in the cockpit and were allowed to accompany the flights.

Flight delays are multifaceted and often cannot be significantly influenced by the pilots. In our case, they were caused by a delayed arrival of the plane from Berlin, a delayed take-off in Zurich due to a passing thunderstorm front and airspace restrictions during the cruise flight. This resulted in a delay of over one and a half hours. You can see in the video how Captain Romano and his First Officer Yannick manage a pleasant and safe flight despite all the challenges and don't lose their sense of humour.
