Taking Off at 43: "My Childhood Dream To Be a Cabin Crew Member Came True"

Stephanie Forrer-Brook is a prime example of the fact that the courage to reorient oneself knows no age limit. The 52-year-old SWISS First Class Cabin Crew worked in gastronomy, in the wine trade, as a chiropodist and swimming instructor, and raised her two children before fulfilling her childhood dream: flying. For nine years now, Stephanie has been a Cabin Crew Member with heart and soul. She advises people who are also considering a career change to simply give it a try, as she tells us.

Stephanie Forrer-Brook: I trained as a hospitality professional, working in bars, service and the kitchen. When my first child was born, I temporarily moved into office work. Later, I turned my passion for wine into a career and worked at the Volg Wine Cellar. When my second child was born, I focused on my family, but the desire to work again was always there.

After training as a chiropodist, which I offered from home, I started teaching at the local swimming school and taking my children to swimming competitions.

"I thought the ship had sailed".

Flying had always been my childhood dream, but I thought that ship had sailed long ago. Then Belair was looking for new cabin crew without age restrictions and I was surprised when I was invited for an assessment and accepted. My background in catering and viticulture definitely helped.

At first I worked full-time, then part-time. I soon became an instructor and a Maître de Cabine. When Belair ceased operations in 2017, I immediately applied to SWISS. I was very nervous - after all, you don't get any younger! So I was overjoyed when I received confirmation. During my training, I worked alongside a lot of young cabin crew, which I really enjoyed. There's so much we can learn from each other. In 2019, I passed the federal professional examination and completed my training as a First Class Cabin Crew Member.

Today, at the age of 52, I work 60% as a First Class Cabin Crew Member for SWISS and have been flying for a total of nine years. I enjoy it, I feel good and I take pleasure in my work. My childhood dream has come true!

"I recommend anyone to take this step."

Four questions for Stephanie

Stephanie, what advice would you give to people who are considering a career change but are reluctant to take the plunge?
I would encourage them to take a leap of faith and try it. No risk, no fun! They should not disregard their previous experience because they have a lot of life experience to bring to aviation. In addition, they will attend an introductory course where they will be carefully trained, which will give them a sense of security. I strongly recommend anyone to take this step.

How do your previous experiences help you in your role as a Cabin Crew Member?
I feel very comfortable and enjoy it very much. I can also use all my previous experience - knowledge of wine, gastronomy and dealing with people, including elderly guests and children. I can also use my new knowledge in my private life.

"I enjoy the trips together with the crews"

What was it like being the oldest person in the introductory course?
The exchange with the younger colleagues was enriching and gave me a boost. My initial doubts disappeared quickly. I really enjoyed learning something new - it keeps me young to this day.

What is it like working with the crews?
I like the mixed crews. We like to go on excursions together during layovers, have interesting conversations and learn from our different perspectives and experiences.
